The Biltmore Today:
George Vanderbilt's room at the Estate
William A.V. Cecil Jr. continues to work on preserving and restoring the Biltmore Estate that his great grandfather worked so hard to create many years ago. The estate receives no grants from the government and remains self-sufficient just as Mr. Vanderbilt wished. The Biltmore is maintained by the money that is made through various avenues like ticket sales to the house, the various shops around the estate, sales from the gardens, the restaurants and last but not least, the winery. The Estate is one of the area’s largest employers with a little over one thousand employees (Carley & Rennicke, 2000).

Each year tourists flock to the Estate. Whether they come in December for a special Christmas candlelight tour of the house where each room has a specially decorated tree or in spring when the gardens are in full bloom, each gets to experience a small piece of the Vanderbilt legacy. Biltmore Village, that George Vanderbilt once built cottages and shops for the estate employees, is now a quaintly decorated area of Asheville with small shops and restaurants (Carley & Rennicke, 2000).
